Captain MacLoed was a great Highland sportsman and an enthusiastic otter hunter. He maintained a pack of silver gray Short-haired Skye Terriers for forty years before immigrating to Canada in 1854. This strain was kept alive by Mr. John Macdonald for more than forty years.

The ancestor of the breed according to evidences was one of the oldest-known strains of Cairn, or "Short-haired Skye Terrier". Thus the breed was generally known at the turn of the century. That breed was founded by Captain Martin MacLoed of Drynock, Isle of Skye. Dog classifieds will list a breeder with puppies and any training classes available.
